The resurgence of magic in the media is an exciting sign that audiences want to experience a sense of wonder and impossibility, and become involved in their entertainment, rather than being passive consumers. The 2015 Academy Awards was hosted by Neil Patrick Harris, who among other things, is an accomplished magician and past President of The Academy of Magical Arts.
Magic has frequently played an integral role in award shows but this year, a magical prediction of the Oscar Winners was featured front and center throughout the broadcast. This demonstration of precognition followed Harris’ stint on American Horror Story as a demented magician sawing Emma Roberts in half. It is rumored that the upcoming theme of Ryan Murphy's notorious anthology series will be magic. Harris is not the only one presenting magic on television. The Ellen Degeneres Show frequently features magicians presenting close-up, interactive miracles, as did Craig Ferguson’s Late Late Show. There are several magic-themed reality and competition TV shows including Close-Up Kings on the Sci Fi Channel, Magic Outlaws on the Travel Channel, Penn & Teller’s Fool Us on The CW Network, and Wizard Wars also on Sci Fi.
Perhaps the most creative and fun show of the bunch is The Carbonaro Effect on TruTV, now in its second season. This blending of Candid Camera style pranks with magic is thoroughly entertaining and involves the unsuspecting “audience” in the fun.
